The mission of the Freshwater Monitor is to support progress measurement in the water sector. Evidence based decision making requires data collection and management, and ultimately this is about supporting knowledge development in the sector. What do we need to know to make the right decisions, and how do we know that we are achieving what we set out to do. The Freshwater Monitor invests in knowledge development in order to be able to provide the support that is needed where it is needed. To provide support to key institutions at national and regional level across the world on internationally and nationally agreed progress monitoring commitments. These include water-related goals, targets and indicators which are contained in the Sustainable Development Goals, the Dublin Declaration, the Human Right to Water, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Framework Convention on Climate Change, etc.
The FWM offers support by:
- Linking research and practice / Combining research into water management as well as knowledge generation with field engagement and recommendations for improved governance
- Keeping track of and reporting on vital developments and trends in the sector
- Focusing on both WASH and IWRM
- Developing tools in support of baseline assessments and progress monitoring
- Undertaking independent monitoring and evaluation on WASH and IWRM programmes in support of regional / national / river basin planning
- Supporting planning teams at regional and national level for programme development
- Provide capacity strengthening to institutions and programmes for water governance
